Hints and Tips

  • Vary your Build Size dimensions (Preferences panel) to create a sequence of slides with different sizes.
  • Try zooming into one of the curious icon-like objects that you see when lake magic is on. Keep zooming, even when you think there’s no more to see.
  • Don’t leave special effects like Ribbons and Lake Magic on all the time. Some fractal images, certain julia sets for example, look better without effects!
  • Keep the detail as low as you can to avoid lengthy generation operations.
  • For a cool 3D effect, try Random Stripes on an image with lots of background space in it. You can get an image like this by finding a julia set that is some distance away from the lake area, then zooming in to it. These images can often be very beautiful by themselves too.
  • Try Random Stripes repeatedly on the top-level Lambda Sine and Cosine formulae to get a series of interesting designs!
  • Use the ‘Pulsing’ palette style with lake cycling OFF for best results.
  • You can customize your Fractopia screen savers by manipulating them in some graphics programs like Paint Shop Pro and Adobe Photoshop. For example, you could paste your own artwork onto one of your savers - when the saver runs, your artwork colours will cycle too! (Note that the original artwork colour palette will be replaced by the colours in the active colour scheme plus the standard Windows colours). From inside your graphics program, just open the .bmp file that you’ll find in your My Fractals folder, and start editing.
