I can't open the private door either, and I suspect it can't be
opened. A question of my own: anyone figured out how to light up the
top of the stairs? TXD reveals a string that would seem to be the
description of that room, lit well...

AFAIK (spoilers ahead!):

The last four points are totally optional, and in fact rather obscure.
If you sniff around the library, you shall ascend to 27 points by
finding a useless object. The object is coveted by someone, or rather
something; defeating the adventurer's bane will gain you another two
points. And the final point may be gained by plughing another game.

Somewhat less obscure (not that that wasn't totally obvious, I'm sure) version:

Go to the bottom of the stairs. SMELL. LOOK UNDER STAIRS. U. GIVE
HERRING TO GRUE. XYZZY.
