I believe that the author is a fan of the old games.  I -also- believe that
he was told to do what he did, that is, he was told to use the live action
crud, by people who are clueless.  Did you ever ask the Fool in Arthur
about Infocom?

I expect that the "corporate weasels" probably don't do things like read
books, and so they've just got the concept of "tv" down, and they assume
that everyone wants everything spelled out for them.  That is, "imagination?
We don' need no steekin' imagination!"
