Did you make the gum a hiddenItem? If I remember correctly, it should
be something like:

gum: hiddenItem, item
....
;

If it's not a hiddenItem, the compiler can't set it up correctly and
you get weird things like this. I usually have to look these up
because I can never remember if hiddenItem has to be the first or the
last class.
