Can anyone explain to me why _anyone_ would sign up for a service that
charges you for connect time BY THE HOUR? It kind of detracts from playing
much in the way of on-line interactive fiction if you don't have unlimited
free connect time.

Why doesn't everyone sign up with one of the many Internet service providers
that give you unlimited connect time, nearly-unlimited disk space, and charge
well under $20 a _month_? Both Netcom and CRL, for instance, have phone
numbers in every major American city, and give you far more services than AOL,
Delphi, Prodigy, Compuserve, etc. etc.

Apologies for the non-IF nature of this post. But the answer to TEAddition's
question is "yes, there are plenty of extremely-low-cost full-service Internet
connections, which (unlike a lot of the high-priced ones) will let you MUD
and FTP stuff to your hearts content."
